Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya sings Chaikovsky's romance "Why the Roses are so Pale?", lyrics by Heine (Translation of Lev Mej), from the Memorial Concert, piano - Mstislav Rostropovich.

O DEAREST, canst thou tell me why
The rose should be so pale?
And why the azure violet
Should wither in the vale?

And why the lark should in the cloud
So sorrowfully sing?
And why from loveliest balsam-buds
A scent of death should spring?

And why the sun upon the mead
So chillingly should frown?
And why the earth should, like a grave,
Be moldering and brown?

And why it is that I myself
So languishing should be?
And why it is, my heart of hearts,
That thou forsakest me? (Translation of Richard Garnett)

  • This is very rare! Thanks God some of her video material survived for us to see her controlled intensity and great presence. She sang songs wonderfully, especially the Russian songbook. Her deep, at the same time melancholy and burning soul fits these heartfelt Russian songs like a glove. Her unusual timbre is also remarkable, how can it be so metallic/dramatic but also conveying such smoothness and romanticism?

  • According to her memoirs, all her work had been destroyed after she lost her citizenship. How did this survive?

Many thanks for making this concert available.

  • I think he/she is lamenting that the record of Vishnevksaya's work was destroyed, and would like to see Mussorgsky's Dances of Death (which appeared on dvd).

  • Has anybody understood rternovski´s message?.I´ll look up in my book ' How to speak russian in fifteen days'.Thanks!.

  • Perfetto)

  • Sooooooo hauntingly beautiful!!!!!!!
