Brand new tower at Makena State Park which will have guards May 1, 2009 Obviously life guard towers alone can not prevent injuries. Beginning May 1, 2009 life guards will be present on the most dangerous beach on Maui. Funding was available since July 1, 2007 to provide this service. For reasons that make no sense life guards will begin some twenty-months later. In that time there have been two deaths and over forty neck compression injuries. Beach users unfamiliar with Makena should consult with a life guard before entering the water. Be sure you understand the shore break and the correct way to enter the water to lesson your exposure to being broken. With the guards in place accidents are expected to rise significantly. Not that there will actually be more than in the past but many go unreported as broken men women and children are taken to the hospital by family members or friends.
Break Neck beach seeks the world record for most dangerous guarded public beach in the world.
Understand why the locals know Makena as Break Neck Beach.
