Plans are afoot to expand coconut cultivation in the Northern region. It is intended to bring about 100,000 acres under coconut cultivation.
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe revealed of a plan to cultivate 75 thousand acres with coconut in the Kilinochchi area alone. He made this reference at a ceremony in Agalawatta. Three coconut plants will be distributed among each resettled family in the District. It is also hoped to provide employment opportunities to young men and women by launching coconut based industries. The purpose of the programme is to productively utilize land which had not been properly used due to terrorist activities. It can also make a vital contribution to the country's economy.
