The first in a series of chess opening videos called Stonewall Legacy, by Matt Pullin.

In this series I will examine the Stonewall Attack for White and display defenses which I think are challenging and/or interesting. Here's a prototypical Stonewall game where everything goes right for White.

  • If I may ask, do you currently use the stonewall or have you given it up? Thanks

  • @nomindbeats I wouldn't use it in a serious game vs. someone of my own strength.

  • I got almost this exact same line in one of my games. However once I played the bishop sacrifice for check and he took with his knight, I brought my queen to h5, and then my opponent played f6 threatening my knight and giving his king an escape square. Does white still have a mateing net, cause I couldn't find one and my oppenent wriggled out of the attack and ended up winning the game. Please advise!

  • Without an exact position I can't help, sorry. But each individual sacrifice should really be calculated on its own. Also, if he played ...f6 threatening your knight, your knight must have been on e5 or g5, so how could it create a flight square?

  • Matty P, why are you avoiding online play this year?

  • New year's resolution. Also I think it's a bad thing.

  • If 1.d4 d5 2.e3 Nf6 3.Bd3 e6 4.Nd2 Nc6, what should White do? Should White play 5.f4 and allow 5...Nb4?

  • Hey, if Black plays 2...Nc6, what should White play? Should White play 3.f4?

  • @GreenCastleBlock Perfect. I'll stick to the Reti.

  • If i may ask, do you use the stonewall in your repertoire?

  • I cant believe it, this is exactly what I was looking for, Thank you

  • wait you live in illinois?

  • what is turkey day. you mean thanksgiving?

  • Hi Matt. This Stonewall Leegacy series is very good. I have taken up the stonewall myself with very good results =). One question I have though is how should white respond to black moving the knight off of f6 in order to prepare a pawn push to f6 to kick the knight. I have had trouble playing against this as then after my knight moves he/she can play f5 and cut off my bishop. Is there any good way to respond to this?
