Rose Arrieta, RN, explains the questions patients should ask when participating in a clinical trial, and outlines the potential benefits and risks of involvement.
Clinical trials are research studies with human volunteers to answer specific questions. The purpose is to help find better ways to prevent, treat and diagnose different diseases and disorders. The University of Chicago Medical Center conducts clinical research because it is part of our mission as an an academic medical center. We perform the most in the state of Illinois.
Participation in clinical trails can provide access to treatments that may not be readily available. Before participating you should feel comfortable asking all types of questions of the research team. Participation is voluntary and confidential. Declining to be involved in a clinical trial will not affect the care you receive at the Medical Center.
The process varies by type of study you are participating in. Overall you work with doctors, nurses and a group of other health care professionals that make up the research team. There are specific instructions for each trial and you are closely monitored for the entirety of the trial.
