Today, Kerry will move into a mother and baby unit where the 17-year-old will be under constant surveillance - but that is undoubtedly the lesser of two evils for the couple, given that they feared they might lose custody of the child they fought so hard to keep. 'To say it's been a roller coaster is an understatement,' says Mark. 'Witnessing them take Ben from Kerry made me cry. He was sleeping in her arms after his feed and looked so peaceful. 'I tried to argue with them, but they said no. 'It's only after they've read medical reports from the hospital, in which the midwives and medical staff said we are loving parents, that it appears they've decided we can have Ben back after all. 'Kerry will be able to care for Ben all day, every day and I'll be allowed to stay at the unit as often as I like.

Kerry has 6 weeks or so in a mother and baby unit.

It's 24/ 7 surveillance, but Fife Council won't give her this option.

So this is her chance, it's all down to her now to prove that she can be a fantastic mum, and that love and IQ are not related.

Love truimphs IQ when it's given a chance.

I don't understand, I watched the tv program about these children whose parents are blind and they keep having these children and the children are raising themselves basically and the government has not removed these children and the parents smoke inside the house and the mother seems a bit dim at times. I just don't get it???

that's so stupid, doesn't even make scientific sense. because most people with low iq, probably didn't inherit it. And as long as they do not inbreed, or marry someone fairly close in kinship, their offspring will not have such a low iq as theirs. so it makes no sense to stop them breeding, it makes more sense to let them breed with people they are not at all related to or even from a different country or county.

@theCosmicQueen In the states at least we do give them the freedom of autonomy, even the mrdd people. If they choose, they can do something, i think it would have to be shown that they are being actually harmed by the choice before it would be nullified; or that someone used undue influence. It sounds like the social workers have the undue influence here! abuse of power? If the family and all , perhaps with a few part time services, can help and raise a baby, so be it.

just look at these 2 and you can see they are a physically good match for each other. this is not some caretaker molesting his ward, it is a genuine peer relationship of man and woman. They should be allowed to marry.

her feelings and responses are pretty obvious, that she is happy if left to do as she wants, it is the interfering state that seems to causing her to have grief and not allowing freedom of choice.

what has happend is they have had a dodgy social worker with a closed mind. Some social workers would find ways around this. The social worker presumes the father/s can't do the job, the gran could help too. The social worker/s should of given them a fair chance. As for marriage. If her partner said can I shoot with with this gun, and she says no, but she says yes to marriage, I would presume she knows the difference.
