what a nice self -deprecating dude..he could have easliy have taken all the credit in the world for helping Jimi get his big break and getting started on the road to the big time, but he doesn't really state that ..I never knew he was the one who had Jimi performing with his band when Chas Chandler came into the picture. I know Keith Richards girlfriend was also instrumental (no Pun!) in helping Jimi get that big break..encouraging him to sing and be a frontman not just a sideman guitarist..
it makes sense John was there for that. he's a far bigger shot than is generally known. thanks very much for posting this. i was extremely curious to know what the great JH said about Jimi...
Great story. I was 16 and saw James and the Blue Flames (Jimi) at the Cafe Wha? and then one night John and Jimi at that Cafe Au Go Go. Everyone on the street (McDougal) was talking about this amazing cat who played with his teeth and behind his back and sounded like no one else. I was into drawing, but all my friends we're young music kids so I tagged along. ha! Maybe music was even more magical to me I think, because I didn't know how to create it.

'A lot of them dont breath the same air'
I know what he is talking about when he says that.
People get some money and a bit of fame and they soon forget.
Theres an old saying 'be nice to people on the way up as your sure to meet them on the way down'.

John Hammond is brilliant. I saw him in Dublin around '93. He was amazing, played solo, just his trusty harp and guitar.
