He suffered from anxiety and increasingly frequent bouts of mental illness throughout his life and died, largely unknown, at the age of 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Iris è un dipinto ad olio su tela di cm 71 x 93 realizzato nel 1889 da Vincent Van Gogh. È stato acquistato nel 1891 dallo scrittore francese Octave Mirbeau e, ora, è conservato nel Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles. Si tratta di uno dei suoi primi lavori eseguiti durante il ricovero presso l'ospedale di San Paul-de-Mausole a Saint-Rémy nell'anno precedente la sua morte nel 1890. Manca la tensione che si nota successivamente nelle sue composizioni. Van Gogh definì la pittura "il parafulmine per la mia malattia", perché riteneva che l'avrebbe aiutato a mantenersi sano di mente.
Il dipinto è stato influenzato dalle stampe giapponesi ukiyo-e, come molti altri suoi dipinti e quelli di altri artisti del tempo. Le somiglianze si presentano con i contorni ben definiti, scorci insoliti, comprese viste in primo piano molto ravvicinate. L'artista considerava quest'opera uno studio, e probabilmente è per questo che non ci sono disegni o schizzi noti, anche se il fratello Theo lo giudicò positivamente e lo inviò alla mostra annuale della Société des Artistes Indépendants nel settembre 1889, insieme alla Notte stellata sul Rodano. Scrisse a Vincent della mostra: "Gli iris sono uno studio pieno di aria e vita."

There is a Canadian short that paints V.G.'s 'Irises' before your eyes. Anybody know where to find it?

je pense que l'artiste dans son esprit voyait les objets défiler comme dans une bande dessinée.Enfin je paraphrase mais cela es plus subtile.Il ne faut pas prêter trop d'intellectualiste à ce que réalise un artiste.D'ailleurs souvent ils s'en défendent aux grands dam des critiques.
