my school got to do a training day with riot control troops. they charged us with horses and even in a controlled enviroment those things are fucking scary. they make you poop your pants even when you know it's just a drill

The horse should only be sent in after the archers have released several volleys to weaken the defensive line. Then the infantry should be sent in, preferably with rapiers. Lastly, mounted Knights wielding sharpened lances and flails should mop up any survivors and opposition "hero" units that the main force has struggled to deal with.
But no; despite attacking a poorly armed and armoured (no pikemen!) mob - casualties were roughly even.
