Remember the Plasma Ball sitting next to the bed in Fry's room in the 'Movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off'? That's what triggered my interest in plasmas all those years ago.

This is a 20 inch wide plasma ball (Plasma Discharge Flask) made from Pyrex® (impact and heat resistant) containing Neon, Xenon and Argon with a custom built power supply which runs at 30-50khz. This is one of the largest plasmas you'll find outside a museum although my video camera seems to be unable to recognize the blue colors in the plasma. This is actually not the largest plasma in my collection although it's the largest that I can carry by myself without assistance.

The globe in this video has more than one effect depending on the Power Supply used at the time (see linked images):

  • How long do plasma balls last???

  • @Animalkisser - They can last many, many years (decades even). If the gasses used are impure or react with one another, they plasma effect will fade and become "softer". But assuming they are professionally made and use the purest (research grade) gasses, they may last a very long time. The plasma in this video (the large one) has Borosilicate glass is nearly 25 years old. The smaller globe is a cheap modern one that has a plastic dome... it will be lucky to last a couple of years.
