Public Window is a project initiated to promote interactive art in public spaces. Artists get the opportunity to develop interactive work for the audience on the street and the internet user at a distance. The viewer can change form, movement and / or lighting of the works through the use of touch-screens fitted to the window, movement or an online interface.
For the pilot in Leiden the artists Thomas Wildner and Guido Winkler developed interactive works in two shop windows. These first two windows Public Window 001 and Public Window 002 were located at Aalmarkt 12 and Stille Rijn 9 in Leiden and linked through an online network.
Public Window is a reaction to social networks, which only connect virtual spaces through a digital interface. The Public Window network goes further and employs teleoperation techniques to physically change real world spaces, making interactive artworks accessible both locally and in the rest of the world.

Public Window is een project geïnitieerd met het doel interactieve kunst in openbare ruimten te bevorderen. Kunstenaars krijgen de mogelijkheid hun werk interactief te maken voor de voorbijganger op straat en de internetgebruiker op afstand.
Voor de pilot hebben kunstenaars Thomas Wildner en Guido Winkler de interactieve kunstwerken Public Window 001 en 002 ontwikkeld in twee etalages in het centrum van Leiden.
De toeschouwer kan de kunstwerken beïnvloeden door zich te bewegen, via touch-screens in de etalageruit of thuis via de website. Hiermee kan de bezoeker de vorm, de beweging of de belichting van de kunstwerken aanpassen.
Public Window is een tegenreactie op de huidige sociale netwerken die slechts virtuele plekken met elkaar verbinden. Bij Public Window gaat het juist om fysieke plekken, waarbij je met de teleoperatie techniek daadwerkelijk iets teweeg kunt brengen op een andere locatie.
Kunst is hierdoor niet meer lokaal, maar wordt voor de hele wereld toegankelijk.
