Here's John Adams' "China Gates" again. This time I memorized it, and made more attempts to be precise/softer.

Please enjoy and rate! Also, don't forget to check out my version of "China Gates" on the organ!

  • I tried this piece once and I found it very frustrating and tedious...which was sad, because I thought it was beautiful in the recording.

It's an unusual piece, but it sounds great if you perform it well. You did really well here. How do you even START to go about memorizing something like this?...

  • Memorizing tips - muscle memory and counting. eg - the left hand does the first pattern 3 times, then change, and do the next pattern 3 times, etc. I also practiced with uneven rhythms (swing rhythm, reverse swing, etc) to help the muscles pick it up. Also, whatever you do - don't count beats - the measure lines don't mean anything. Good luck!

  • This is well played indeed! Much improved on the first attempt. A very tricky piece indeed and this is a simply lovely version!

  • sounds great btw!!! I'm gonna come back to this next month

  • yes I used "counting" and my ear to memorize this last year
