By what Google does with the Market -not letting users download and install the market app-, they clearly are going the "Microsoft way".

"How might we best screw our users?"
"Oooh, i know, master: pretend we make an open source OS and then screw them with the market, so no-one we don't like could use the said OS. It's brilliant, i say, brilliant. Muhahahaha!"

I really like android I think its a great idea, but my biggest problem with when you said, " we just want Android to get all over the place"... My understanding is, if i were a developer. It would be very costly to create a nice UI that is catchy. So I would choose Android because its free and i would be able to save on costs... But the long-run problem I see with this is your phone just becomes a "conformist" and you loose the "unique-ness" of your phone. so when buyers decide on buying a

phone they will choose the phone with the best HARDWARE specs, (EX. Best camera, Best screen quality, Colors...etc...) This becomes a huge issue in business because you loose the "unique" aspect of your product and this decreases the "real value" .... unlike Apple iPhone, It is truly one of a kind... even though it is riskier and more costly to be the only phone running OS X, this makes iPhone Unique which creates greater "Real Value"

Google are behaving like facists, Microsoft is FAR more "OPEN" than Google, a terrible pity, but true. Have a look at the hundreds of versions of windows mobile their community develop, and microsoft does nothing to stop it... Unlike Google who serve Andriod rom hackers with Cease and Desist orders... shame on you Google.

They served one (uno, eins) modder, cyanogen, with a Cease and Desist, with legal basis. Android may be open source, but Google Experience apps (maps, youtube, browser, sync, market) are not. Cyanogen and everyone else were pushing it, but the last straw was when he included a leaked version of the new Market app. That prompted the C&D. But now, he's worked with Android developers to get his modded firmware legal, with the option to get the apps from another source (HTCs images). tl;dr, facepalm

A little-known or little-ignored fact is that there was some friction within Google itself over the C&D. The C&D was from the legal department of Google while the Android team strongly disagreed with the C&D.

Regardless, Cyanogen is definitely doing the community a great service by keeping these custom firmwares in a good light with Google.
