the parcham kushai (raising of the flag) symbolises the start of muharram for many shia, who replace the standard red flag found in hussainias with a special black one, which demonstrates a period of mourning (similar to flying flags at half mast in many european countries)

the flag itself is a representation of the flag held by the flag bearer of hussain (as) - his brother ghazi abbas, known as the "alamadar".
