@MrKaloralros The song rebukes the Jacobites. But it was not Charles who was ths supposed 'rightful king' it was his father James, The Old Pretender. The son of James VII of Scotland. What is a rightful king is of course debateable. Would Americans recognise such a thing? The Stuarts claimed it was their's by Divine Right - but the Scottish parliament itself had stripped James of this throne and branded him a traitor. Even the Declaration of Arbroath denounces the idea of divine right!

The song isn't about anyone selling out their country! The original source song was a vehemently anti-Jacobite song. Burns modified it and toned it down. It is in essence here an early anti-war song. He's blaming the Jacobites for the continuing strife (ie it is written in character presumably by someone during the rebellion) and telling them to just let it be. Leve a man alone to his fate.

MrKaloralros it is all about the Jesuits trying to get the scottish catholic Stuart tyrants back on the English throne. It is with the jacobite movement that we have the creation of wicked "Scottish Rite freemasonry" and all satanic occultism. They were ultimately fighting for a foreign power (Rome) and not for the general welfare of England.

If you looked at this song historically, and the Jacobite claim, it's actually about a group of people putting the RIGHTFUL king back on the throne, namely, James II and VII of England and Scotland, then Prince Charles Eduard Stewart, (Edward Stuart, depending on your preference for your spelling). History says they sold out their country merely because they lost, not because they were in the wrong. We all know history is written by the victor, after all.
