I emailed Granada or ITN or whoever owns this documentary (I forget now) to see if it was possible to get a copy and they said it was not. Too bad. I have not seen this for years so thanks for posting it.
Like Mad Hatter I saw this on the SF Bay Area's KQED in June of 1987 when the 20th anniversary of Summer Of Love was going on, and like ilfonzio I tOO have this on VHS--without the first 20 minutes :( The clip of Adrian Mitchell reading "To Whom It May Concern" kicks tail any day of the week, given that we still have the same game going on...tell me Lies that Bin Laden is Dead, he's not at Sea, there's a whole Nation out there just waiting to do 9-11 squared. Check it.
@MattHatter I had a very similar experience, summer of 87 I started smoking weed when I was 14. Sgt. Pepper's 20th anniversary was talked about on TV and in the magazines. Grateful Dead had a new album and a new hit. Recorded this in the fall of 87 then started growing my hair over my ears and wearing tie dyes. I too rejected that music people my age were into it just seemed so fake and forgettable. Looking back I'm so glad I went for the 60s because that music stays good forever.
The fact that this hasn't been remastered and released on DVD is a shame. It is a wonderfully made documentary. One of the best ever in my opinion. Very informative, very thorough, very colorful, very inspiring. This PBS special was a God send back when I was 10 years old. I was rejecting all the garbage my fellow classmates were into like Madonna and rap and I was going for the '60s. I remember sitting in the den and watching this on TV and it was life changing.
