Nacimiento de Islas y Señales Inequivocas 2007-08 Miguel Conesa Osuna

This is a video which records the one man show I had between August and September of 2008 at the Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Park (Center), located at Tibes, near Ponce, Puerto Rico. You can see more of the art works at the following link:

This park is dedicated to the Taíno Culture, on which used to be an Indian Village is one of the most important archeological discoveries made in the Antilles. The discovery provides an insight as to how the indigenous tribes of the Igneri and Tainos lived and played during and before the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the New World.

I was inspired on the Taíno theme, with a far different approach never been considered by any other artist in Puerto Rico. My concept was to present the origin of the islands, especially those islands in the Caribbean, with some of the early symbolism created by those cultures that flourished in that part of the New World.
The way the islands were at first, without any pollution or land ownership was a fact that the European could not understand. The Islands are symbolically presented by the female figures, scuptures and installations. Any island is woman and mother who takes care of her children, who are not other than the inhabitants of theses small pieces of land floating on the ocean. The stones represent the origin of the islands taken place during the Pangaea and the process was assisted by all sort of spiritual forces.

Me inspiré en el tema Taino, acercándome de una manera distinta no antes considerada por ninguno de los artistas en Puerto Rico. Mi concepto fue el de presentar los orígenes de las islas, especialmente las islas del Caribe, con alguno de los simbolismos más viejos creado por esas culturas que florecieron en esa parte del nuevo mundo y que hace alución a nuestros indios Taínos.

La manera en que esas islas eran al principio, sin contaminación o títulos de propiedad un hecho que los europeos no podían entender. Las islas están representadas simbólicamente por la figura femenina. Cada isla es mujer y madre que cuida as sus niños, quienes son los habitantes de los pequeños pedazos de tierra que flota en el mar. Las piedras representan el origen de las islas que tomo lugar durante la Pangea y cuyo proceso fue asistido por toda clase de fuerzas espirituales. Mi trabajo es una manera de aludir al estado esotérico y espiritual, más que a regrear el modo de vida de las comunidades Taínas de esa época.
