At Wednesday's House Armed Services Committee hearing, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) attacked budgeted funds for closing Guantanamo Bay as "asinine" "reckless spending" at a time of record deficits. Unfortunately, he then sought to ensure General McChrystal could have access to another 5,000-10,000 troops...which would cost the U.S. taxpayer $5-10 billion a year.
Our country has been immeasurably weakened ~ not by al-Qa'ida or the Taliban, but by government's lust for oil. We, the people, are in MORE danger now. We must NOT keep paying taxes for this war while the American middle class is "dying on the vine," struggling to eat, to house itself, to get medical care, to send their kids to college, to do the most basic things that our touted "democracy" ~~ the democracy we claim to be "spreading," prides itself on providing to American citizens.

The war in Afghanistan is an oil war. It's not a "spread democracy" war. It's not a "protect the American people" war. It's not a war against terrorism. It's a war OF terrorism ~ the U.S. against those nations that we wish to do our bidding in our wish to commandeer the world's supply of oil. It's a "secure oil for the powerful and wealthy."
