What do I miss?? AM radio, in the sense that you can hear the Temptations, Lynn Anderson, and Led Zeppelin, consecutively, on the SAME station, liking each song and WITHOUT changing the station. Now, except maybe on oldies stations, things are more categorized. Too, TOO bad.
I'd honestly be happy if modern Country music was more like instead of the mindless corporate pop that it is today. I just don't know how anyone could prefer Taylor Swift to this. People are stupid.
I'm not sure which summer this song was big-but whenever I hear it, I'm seven years old again and my biggest worry is how many hot dogs I can wolf down and how long the adults will make me wait and tell me it's okay to go back swimming out in the lake. Endless summer days, a rented cottage, even DAD relaxing, the best big sister EVER, more cousins than I even knew I had and what I wouldn't give to go back to that time if only for a day.
Trivia: Lynn was the first to have a hit with this song, but was about the FIFTH artist to record it! It was first recorded by Joe South in '68, for his "Instrospect" album,
a year later, Dobie Gray recorded a soulful rendition that was a modest R&B hit.
Then The THree Degrees did a version, followed supposedly a version by Elvis Presley.
Check out the earliest Joe South and Dobie Gray versions. They're here on You Tube.
Joe South (real name: Joseph Alfred Souter) wrote this song which was a big hit for Lynn Anderson, despite objections by execs of her label Columbia. CBS Records (Now Sony Music) head Clive Davis however, overruled them, and give Lynn her biggest hit single to this day. Rose hit #1 in the winter of 1970. South also wrote "Hush" by the heavy metal group Deep Purple and 'Yo-Yo' by The Osmonds, before went on to record his songs like ''Games People Play'' and "Walk a Mile In My Shoes.

Great song accompanied by nostalgic memories. Plus it also has a few moral lessons.
