"Male hispanics get asked to present photo ID- which is not required under New Mexico state law- with a significantly greater frequency than other people within the general New Mexico population. Pretty serious problem."

Common Cause New Mexico Director Steve Allen recently sat down with us to explain some of the services that his organization can provide for voters with the 2010 general election right around the corner. Common Cause is a kind of lobby for "ordinary people" to have a relationship with their government.

Common Cause is helping to provide a voter protection program called Count Every Vote New Mexico, a nonpartisan program to protect voters' rights. For example, if a poll site illegitimately requests a voter's photo ID, Common Cause and Count Every Vote N.M. will help them fight for their voting rights.

Maintaining the integrity of elections is extremely important, because as Allen reminds us, "voting is power- and if you don't vote you're giving up your power to someone else."

The Count Every Vote hotline is 1-866-OUR-VOTE
