Just a quick ISS pass from earlier this evening. I decided to take the Canon 400D out as well to get some timelapse shots of me setting up and of the station itself going over.

I used Alpha Centauri for focus while it was still fairly bright out should have spent some more time doing that because in the end my focus was a tad off (as you might be able to see).

I used my 10 Dobsonian telescope to hand track the ISS through my finderscope. I align the finderscope on a planet or star, set the focus and exposure, then wait for the ISS to appear. Its then just a matter of following the station through the finderscope trying to keep it in the centre of the cross hairs. Hence why the video is quite shakey. For capture I used my DMK21AU04.AS CCD with a 2X Barlow lens.

  • Nicely done,

    Great images of the ISS!

I was thinking of getting an 8" dob, what kind of magnitude would you reckon I could see out of it?

Also, I was curious if you have a GoTo mount for your dobsonian?

Anyway good work, I enjoy watching your vids!

  • Hi, sorry for the late reply.

I'm not really sure to what magnitude you'd be able to see down to ... I spend most of my time on planetary stuff where I don't have to worry about it much. I'm sure you could get a better answer at some astronomy forum somewhere. Sorry I can't be of much help.

Also, none of my mounts have GoTo.

  • Awesome stuff mate. What are the skies like in Australia? I plan on emigrating there one day, Astronomy totally sucks here in London, UK.

  • Yeah, the skies seem to be fairly good over here. I'm lucky enough to live a fair way out from many bright light sources, so the skies are even better where I am. Quite lucky, really. :)

  • i love your videos!

  • thats pretty awesome, you should mess around with some servos and you should be able to get some really awesome footage of the space station.

  • Very nice video and grate channel, keep going.

  • No worries,

    Thanks anyway its much appreciated.

  • Sweet!

And the handheld 'wavyness' makes it look all Battlestar Galacticky.

  • Well done !! Thank you from Palmdale,Ca. We generally have good "seeing" conditions. Nexstar 5 SCT plus an Icom R-7000, Cushcraft 2m/440 ant.,and Yaesu remote tracker (for ISS downlinks)

  • I heard that too to a lot of my friends..THe sky is just too light polluted :(....

  • Nice. Thank you for the info and the shots.
