An interview with Mark-Anthony Turnage, specifically on his works "This Silence" and "No Let Up," and more generally on the influence of Jazz and popular music on his personal contemporary classical style. Conducted by Steve Snowden as part of the Pendulum New Music series at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
@intervalkid No, I greatly respect/respected the output of Williams and Poledorous. Reich, Glass, and Nymans I'm not too keen on. Minimalism isn't my cup of tea. I prefer Birtwistle, Adams, Penderecki and Matalon. Though I admit, I like Shankar.
I was mainly referring to film composition though - mainstream trash.

@RogueRotting360
Nonetheless. It started when "composers began to abandon sheet music...."
They are still composers.
Even if you don't consider them composers (and I don't see how you couldn't consider Bazil Poledorous or John Williams a composer). What about Reich, Glass, Shankar etc.
You may not respect their compositions but they are still composers.

@intervalkid Today soundtracks to movies are almost entirely monotonous, bland, repetetive and forgettable. That started when composers began to abandon sheet music in favour of sample libraries, MIDI sequencers and keyboards, and less and less were classically trained.

@organman52
Tons of composers today. Listen to the soundtracks to movies. Don't you think that's composers.

Absolutely agree with TassiloDavid

Another non-composer. What audacity these people demonstrate. There ARE no composers alive today - get used to it.

The best British composer since Purcell is Brian Ferneyhough.

best brit composer since VW? no way!
What about Tippett's piano concerto or Midsummer Marriage or Birtwistle Silbury air...much better than anything i`ve ever heard by Turnage.
