Zinc Sulfur Flash Powder

32 grams of a 6:1 ratio of Zinc and sulfur powder are ignited by a 6 inch piece of visco fuse. The reaction reaches a startling height of 6 feet before the mushroom cloud drifts off. The heat from the reaction could be felt about 10 feet away.

yeah, the actual reaction taking place is a mixture of S + O2 --> SO2, Zn + O2 --> ZnO2 and Zn + S ==> ZnS

does this explode when confined? 32 grams of unconfined kclo4/aluminum flash powder would leave that tray in pieces.

It does. its sulfur is nowhere near the oxidizing agent that Perchlorate is, nor is zinc as good a reducing agent as aluminum. This is more of a propellent than an explosive.

@vmelkon its copper on the outside, not bronze, and when you melt them them you get a sludge of black copper stuff semi mixed with the zinc, but yes that would be a good way to get zinc, especially because you can do it in the kitchen

Is it safe to mix by sieving or is the diaper method essential?
