yeah, you are right. but I as a photographer am ok with all the other photog using tools for 50 bucks that does not give them anything ;)
it's funny to see that many people don't really think about what the light actually does, they just think "it looks professional and it costs much, so it gives me better pictures" :D

True, the larger the light source, the softer the shadows, however, that small diffuser used over the flash head DOES soften the shadows more than straight on bare flash.
When outdoors where there is no reflective surfaces, there is very little difference in overall the quality of the light, especially at further distances. Also, the portable "softbox" shown there can interfere with the flashes built in IR illuminator, whereas the smaller diffuser does not.
