Oct. 19, 2009: Annenberg Program on Online Communities Speaker Series - Jeremy Bailenson, Stanford University

Join students and faculty for a presentation by Jeremy Bailenson, assistant professor of communication and director of the Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL) at Stanford University. His topic: The Virtual Self. From Dr. Bailenson: "I discuss two lines of research that explore the nature and implications of avatar-based interaction. The first line tracks the consequences of choosing avatars whose appearance differs from our own. My laboratory's research shows that wearing avatars of varied attractiveness, height, and age alter not only behavior online but also subsequent actions in the physical world. The second area examines the consequences of choosing avatars whose behavior differs from our own. Our research demonstrates that watching one's virtual self behave in novel manners which have never been performed by the physical self affects memory, health behavior, and persuasion." This talk is a special presentation of the Annenberg Research Seminar Series.
