Korngold's The Love Duet from Act 1 of Die Kathrin, by Korngold, sung by Darrell Rowader and Carolyn Whitaker on January 4 2009 at Tempe Center for the Arts with the MusicaNova Orchestra conducted by Warren Cohen.

Die Kathrin was the last of Korngold's operas, and as far as I can tell, has only been staged twice. After the massive complexity of Das Wunder der Heliane, Korngold worked on a number of projects that involved much simpler sounds and textures. Die Kathrin is really a simple love story, although the plot itself became somewhat distorted by Korngold's attempts to make it more politically palatable in the Austria of the late 1930's. It has some beautiful music, and there are a number of set pieces that would make great additions to concert programs, including this beautiful duet.

MusicaNova Orchestra has as its mission the performance of unjustly neglected music. Find out more at MusicaNovaaz.org.

  • Korngold's vocal / orchestral music usually moves me. Hollywood owes much of its better music to Korngold's pioneering as he raised that standard to motion picture composing.

  • Beautiful music, beautiful performance
