with Brian of http://www.bladeblaze.com - How to develop natural Saucer Skills, on the ice or at home on that nice smooth kitchen floor!

The ability to release the puck, pass, shoot, with a natural saucer (puck spiral) is very essential. The technique allows for the puck not to flutter as it cuts through the ice, breaking through bumps, skate blade ruts, etc. The "saucer spiral" of the puck is what allows for the puck to keep moving flat, not going into a flutter as it makes contact with ice surface damage & the odd light contact of sticks, etc.. Also the "Saucer Pass" (the release of the puck above the ice) is able to land & stay flat on the surface due to the "puck spiral".

Step 1. As seen in the video, the puck starts on the heel forehand side. Pull stick blade in towards you, causing rotation of puck to top of forehand toe, then reach stick blade back outwards causing puck to wrap around toe to backhand side, down the blade, around the heal back to forehand side, etc.. ... the forehand heal to toe start is also in relation to saucer release, this drill makes it natural to release a saucer pass on the ice..

Step 2. The stick blade should never come off the surface. The stick blade is moved up and down / away straight from you, and straight back into you, oval circling around the puck. the puck rotates as it makes contact with the stick blade, as you move your stick blade up and down in the oval circular motion.

Step 3. Take your time, ideally the puck should be on the "tape" most of the time, NO side to side "over" the puck! Stick stays on the "surface/ice". When it becomes natural, speed it up. Naturally you'll start releasing the puck with a bit of spin coming off it. When that becomes natural, try to release the puck, using the forehand heel to toe stick blade technique opening your blade to create the "saucer pass"
