American students' engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) has been identified as a major obstacle to U.S. innovation and global leadership.
The decline in interest begins as early as fourth grade.
The programs at St. Catherine University's National Center for STEM Elementary Education address a major reason students lose interest in STEM—the shortage of elementary educators who can teach STEM curriculum with competence and confidence.

It is my hope that by starting the students out earlier in STEM they will be able to do better with existing science activites in school such as Science Olympiad when they get into middle and high school. Bill Kuhl
