Grappling Hooks, the debut album from North Atlantic Oscillation, was released earlier this year on Kscope. The record immediately received rave reviews across the board, including being named Zane Lowes record of the week, and their first UK headline tour confirmed their status as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge in 2010.

The band return in June with Ceiling Poem, the second single to be lifted from the album. The track was described as a gentle dreambeat that explodes into a technicolour psych-out by Classic Rock and by The Quietus as inverted, unexpectedly Byrds-inflected folktronica.

They will also be embarking on a short UK tour in May ahead of festival appearances this summer.

The band have been described as prog-pop and electro-rock, but really they just make music. The music has soaring harmonies and loud guitars and dreamy synths and heavy drums and strange effects and unexpected changes-of-mind.

NAO are the Scottish based trio of Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, synths, sax, percussion), Ben Martin (drums, percussion, programming) and Bill Walsh (bass, synth bass, vocals). They describe themselves as playing their instruments within a computerised wall of sound.

Grappling Hooks is a subtle yet powerful kaleidoscope of purring electronics, atmospheric layers and hook-laden melodies. Preceded by single Drawing Maps from Memory, out on March 8th, the album proves that the praise that was heaped upon Callsigns EP was entirely justified.

It sounds nothing like you expect it to. But then thats exactly what makes North Atlantic Oscillation so beguiling, intriguing and fascinating theres a surprise around every corner. Are you ready?

Their bright, friendly electronics and Brian Wilson harmonies suggest Scotland may have the beginnings of its own Animal Collective. Ones to watch. Metro

  • You're not flying in my skies again Not after that landing Or that skewed approach You're not getting off the ground this year Limitless corrosion Questionable skills You woke up in a cotton-white cube Clutching hand-forged papers Muttering callsigns You were found in numerous back streets Holding an umbrella like a satellite dish

  • Looking forward to your gig at Sneaky Petes, Edinburgh on the Fri 13th Aug '10. Last time NAO played there was an absolute blinder, just a shame the venue wouldn't let them continue past 11pm when the audience were going completely daft for the lads!
