This is the first run of our recently bought Lister Diesel JP3 engine. It sat under a tarp for 20 years before we were lucky enough to find it for sale on ebay. After a long trip home from Gawler, South Australia to Melbourne, Victoria, we set about cleaning out the sludge in the sump. Then after a little TLC around the injector pump an injectors, ensuring oil pressure was ok, it fired up easily, first on 1 cylinder, then the other two joined in. I still plan on a "cosmetic" restoration though, sandblast, painting etc. Then I will pair it up with a 15 Kva 240 volt alternator and set up properly in a purpose made tandem trailer. It goes to show how well made these were. This engine is about 69 years old, and looks to have had a very hard life so far. Now it's time to give it the care and dressing up it deserves! Hope you enjoy this video. Feel free to comment. Also see my other videos about my "Listeroid" 8/1 Generator/Compressor project. Cheers.

  • wow that engine is so easy to turn over

  • @infinity3jif. It sure is, but only due to the decompression device. It holds open the exhaust valves on all three cylinders till you get it spinning and hit the release lever. Then the flywheel takes over and away it goes.

  • no starter motor?

  • No starter yet. Im looking into either direct air start (there was a valving kit you could buy to do this years ago) or electric start. Even so, it starts pretty easy on the crank, the decompression and big flywheel make it easy.

  • You enjoy her for me. I had a 1944 JP3 same colour, the original Lister grey that I rescued from a UK Lincolnshire RAF base but with electric start. I covered her in a sheet outdoors while i finished a narrow boat shell and fit out for the next few years. In 06 diagnosed with MS that finished my dreams but hey ho thanks for reliving them for me... You'll enjoy her I know , maybe let me know when you've blasted and brassed her up.... all the best, John.

  • Wow ... love that low sweet bark at low RPMs ... thanks for the vid.

  • What a wonderful engine. Hope to see the finished version with the generator in place.

  • We had JP series listers a very long time ago, a JP2, a JP4 and in our 65 ft boat ,a JP6 ..! the big 6 could be cranked by two guys but the airstart was easier.

  • You're not looking to sell this are you?

  • what was this engine originally found in?

  • Superb!

    Lovely sound, great engine!

Noisier than mine with a new exhaust though!

  • Puffing away.., I want one! Thumbs up!
