Breath of Fire 3 - Lowest Level No Faerie Village Part 23: Dragon Lord

Last real boss before the final showdown.

Dragon Lord has no elemental weaknesses, and has crazy attack and defence stats if compared to the earlier enemies. In the video, you can see Garr taking 60 damage from a normal attack after TWO Shields, which is pretty impressive.

Though lacking elemental weaknesses, Dragon Lord is, well, a dragon, meaning specific weapons like Dragon Blade and Dragon Spear will be twice as effective. Garr shouldn't be attacking the boss in the first place but Ryu can be equipped with a Dragon Blade and deal some nice damage with Triple Blow, and this weapon is actually a guaranteed steal from the boss (or a guaranteed drop if you don't attempt to steal it). Only Rei can steal with Pilfer in this challenge, and I never found a right time to do it, so I just left Ryu there with his Royal Sword.

Most of the damage though, is done by Weretiger Rei, put onto the point of the attack formation, after enough Shields have been cast. You may notice that the damage done after all this buffing is still strong, and enough to kill Rei in 2 turns, and with Rei berserk there's nobody in the party fast enough to heal when in need. This is why later on during the battle, I have Ryu use a Vitamin just in case. As you would expect, it's not needed when I do it.

As for magic... Dragon Lord uses Blizzard, Inferno and Sirocco. Equipment takes care of Inferno, Blizzard is absorbed by Rings of Ice on everybody and Sirocco is half wind-elemental, which barely any equipment grants protection to. This is why Garr and Rei have wind inoculation for this battle. Ryu has status inoculation, which is nice to have here too (he has 75% status resistance, Garr and Rei have full immunity).

An easier strategy would be to go Kaiser form after stealing the Dragon Blade and using Triple Blow in attack formation. A turn of that would do 3K damage, no kidding. However, I felt I wouldn't tolerate farming any more Wisdom Fruits and I wanted to save as many as possible for the final battle.

what is the secret of controling rei's weretiger? just one influence? do u have any status changing rings that prevent confusion or something?

1 Influence is enough. Make sure Influence's user is alive and, if it's Ryu, that he doesn't transform.

how the hell you get a holy avenger?? you'll need to beat up an arch mage in able to obtain that right??

Yeah. Very possible with a lot of patience and the Monopolize Death trick.

How is your level so low? You must have fought many battles which should have increased your level.. How is it possible?

One character used Monopolize and died before the end of the battle, resulting in no experience for anybody. This was done whenever possible.
