Interview of Claude Fregeau commander at Quebec Secours, a Search and Rescue volunteer organisation, at CTV, by Caroline Van Vlaardingen, after the non response to SOS signs in the Rockies, in Golden, BC. During a ski trip, Mr Gilles Blackburn and Marie-Josée Fortin got lost. They trace SOS on the snow but, even if seen by helicopters and repported to the RCMP and local SAR teams, nobody seems ti have paid sufficient attention to those distress signs, and Mrs Fortin died several days after from hypothermia. Mr Blackburn was finally rescued after nine days, suffering from frostbites.

  • Tracing "SOS" on the snow is one of the main recommandations of the RCMP in his program "Hug a Tree" for children.

  • Going into the back country I'll prepared and with only two granola bars is not reccomended. The first mistake here was these two heading into the back country without the proper provisions.
