Peter Mattei performs the Onegin's Aria (Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin) Daniel Barenboim / Wiener Philharmoniker Anna Samuil (Tatiana) Salzburger Festspiele 2007
I must say I find him way too playful! onegin is serious when he tells that to Tatjana... and let's not forget he is a noble, and a bored one! I think Hvorostovsky conveyed all this better than Mattei. but Mattei is a GREAT singer!!!! only this is not his role!
He sung Posa in Don Carlo here at the Norwegian Opera. He's was not nasal. I would not say he's too nasal in this clip either. He's got a beautiful voice. Truly a gorgeous baritone. *sigh*
I discovered Peter Mattei years ago on a recording of Stenhammar songs, and became a fan instantly. He truly has a gorgeous timbre and a great technique. I really love this performance of Onegin, thanks for the post!
@solisef That's true, a bit (too?) nasal. Could be he wanted to mix head resonances into the sound by adding mask. But, it stuck in the nose. The good side of it: The nasality kind of "smears" the tones into a nice legato. Well. You're right. Should really be a bit more open.
But I honour him for singing this in Russian. I would not dare it, it tell you... ;-)
@jkaise I completely agree! You were lucky to work with such a wonderful singer as Mattei. You are a very good singer yourself, and I think you know more about Peter's talent than the people insulting him on here. Congratulations on a wonderful production.
