Gay people have been taught not to value themselves.  They get comfort by engaging in anonymous sex. If you don't really care about yourself, you're not going to care about someone you don't know. This is how AIDS is spread. Many gay men would rather be dead than abstain from sex, which is how they see the matter. If people would give up the idea of anal intercourse altogether (even with a condom) a lot of lives could be saved.
