It's a KC-135 from Rickenbacker on the south side of Columbus. The boom is down because they broke the hoist cable and they had to land with the boom down. I'm a crew chief on 135s at Rick and I was on duty that day.

KC-135 or KC-17 refueling tanker with refueling boom down at the back. boom operator lies down in a small compartment and refuels planes in mid air

its a Tanker, used by the military to refuel planes in flight.

@IrenaScott The "stick", or "boom", in the back shortens and comes up for landings.

It's a KC-17, i flew them before...refueling jets and helicopters and such for the military, while airborne

this must be close to a military flight pattern,I see lots of post with military planes,or maybe a airshow close by,nothing to worry about,if that's what is being implied.

@richintalent There ain't no such animal as the KC-17.

In all likelyhood this is a training flight with a new boom operator.
