    Just expanding on your ideas:

    The usual idea is that "space" is found within the universe. "Infinite space to expand into" kind of implies something is outside of the universe.

    So whatever is outside of the universe is what the universe is expanding into. But it still brings us back to the issue Inmatinus mentioned in the comments: If the universe is infinite how can there be any room left somewhere else so that it can expand into that?

    It's almost as if it's a finite infinite nature?
