@pianoNYK There is a good blog from an EX marathoner, ironman runner, carbloader that might interest you and answer your questions. Google for Mark's daily apple. Seriously, you have to take a look.

Sarah, I am a big fan of your work but the comment about tanning beds is disappointing. Indoor tanning has many beneficial health benefits. Such as producing vitamin D and helping to prevent cavities. They also alleviate PMS and depression. Like most thing moderation is best. By the way cancer rates are higher in sun deprived areas of the world and cancer rates go down as you get closer to the equator.

wow 80% is diet?? I thought it was more like 60%...hmm good to know, thanks!
I don't question the contestants' fitness levels (since clearly they - and you - are very fit), but in general, but is it really "healthy" to eat so few carbs? When I ran cross country / track / marathons, I was always told to carb-load, especially the few days prior to a big race. Are carbs good for fast fuel for distance runs / endurance events but less productive/helpful for other types of exercise? (Corollary: endurance requires fast fuel, strength-training requires protein-replacement?)

@pianoNYK You are absolutely right. They only eat like crazy people when the event gets close. Most do not do a lot of cardio either (unless they have more fat to lose than others). When they do the shows, they are not healthy. They don't stay that weight for more than a day to be honest. The had half a sweet potato and some brown rice and veggies do have carbs :)
