This Is the 1st stab at an animated short from my 1st year at uni. The brief was to make a 30 second to 2 minute short that used video compositing. This is what i came up with. I still like it, although it's got the amaturish lack of timing which is something i feel i've improved on. Overall, a nice idea i think, and i did as good of a job as i could with the limited knowledge in 3D Studio Max

  • Really great video, how did you get the video clip in the background?

  • Thanks, it was quite a long time ago but I think for this (which was made in 3D studio Max) I set the 3D cameras' background image (select a camera and look though it in a viewport, then press alt+B if my memory serves me correctly) as the live action video file. I then positioned the character and bowl in the relative part of the shot. When you move the timeline the video frames should adjust too to match.

  • This was very useful in the shot where i move the camera as I moved the virtual camera in the same way so that it looks fairly seamless. Something to bear in mind though is to create geometry that matches the environment in video (such as the table) and make it invisible except for the shadow map. This will ensure shadows appear to be cast by 3D objects correctly, although.

  • Another way would be to render frames from a piece in a format that uses transparencies (such as .PNG) and then use those as a layer above you live action video in a program like Adobe Premier. Also note that QuickTime video if using ‘+millions of colours’ includes transparencies to save you always working with source render frame images.

Thanks for your comment. It's really valued and please ask if you have any other questions on this or any of my other videos.

  • Is this the kind of thing you wanna get into, where are you at uni, ive just graduated! I used 3d max in my last year but i wasnt a graphics student you see so we only touched it but it was great and somthing i would like to explore further maybe. Not sure how many jobs there are out there for this kind of stuff?

  • I'm at Huddersfield Uni. That was made in the 2nd part of my 1st year after some basic training was the first thing I had really done. Yeah I want to go into animation eventually, I’m due to spend the rest of the year training myself up on software and techniques to create a showreel so I can approach companies for a placement or some work experience. There are a surprising amount of jobs going in all sorts of offshoots of animation and 3D animation. What did you study that took you into 3D?
