@aminevich a police officer is a local city officer that can only operate within the city that has them contracted. A sheriff is an deputy that can operate within the whole county that they are contracted in.

@indianadieselboy oh, I never realized the hierarchy; thanks! Though I curse cops when they ticket me, I feel grateful for the amazing and dangerous job they do. Oddly, the cops that came to my martial arts school can't fight to save their lives. They tell me that they have a VERY short course in self defense, and that's all; hence why they have to train outside of work. These guys seem to have good stand up skills.

@aminevich A sheriff is in charge of the whole county and police is just in the city. Unless you have a county police witch most of the time the sheriff is in charge of that to. Take Las Vegas for instents the Las Vegas Metro police is headed up by a sheriff but in Indianapolis, Indiana metro police has a chief. Most of the time the sheriff has the most power locally.

I know I am going to sound like a dork, but what is the difference between LAPD (which I assume are police) and LASD(which I assume are "Sheriff"?)
how does a sheriff differ from a police officer?
