  • Just the curve to the grain silos, also there was a spur to the Ravensdown shed when I last passed by on the Southerner way back in 1998. Was the spur still there when you filmed this? Just wondering if the yard is remaining because it's not worth the cost in ripping up?

  • I think that as long as there's hope of getting freight from Ravensdowne the siding will remain and thus the yard. The sidings are useful for work trains etc no doubt, especially as there's virtually no yard at Gore. Pics of the sidings etc in McNab are on my Flickr site anyway - just do a Google search for wheel5800 McNab, they show up, cheers.

  • use to see the truncated section of the branch from the Southerner. ended up at those grain silos, but they must've changed the profile of SH1 at the turn of to Tapanui because they were quite high up.

  • I think these silos are showing on my Flickr site pics - unfortunately I can't post the URL here.

Did you say a section of the branch remained after it's closure?

  • When was this vid shot? McNab's yard still pretty much in situ...lot of flat tops, to Edendale know doubt?

  • The yard seems to be fairly well much in recent situ. The Waikaka Branch closed in the early sixties for which McNab was the junction. So it would have been an even more interesting place 50+ years ago.

The branch veered off to the left as you look north. You can see the formation where it crossed SH1 if you're looking for it.

  • @wheel5800 ...good point, also it's out of the way location helps. Gee I can remember Gore having a very substatial yard, station and really long platform bracketed with signal boxes at each end, the first stop after departure from In'gill on thhe Southerner when it was a 'real' train in the early 1980's!
