So he is not singing about the big death, he is singing about the "little death." If he could feel her love, he could die happy... this is not necessarily a sad aria merely because the word "death" is used. Little death is an old euphemism for orgasm.

La tecnica e' quella dei più grandi cantanti di ogni tempo. se alza le spalle per respirare, lo può anche fare, il fiato lo manda sempre nel diaframma, e canta sempre con la gola aperta, con il sostegno dei muscoli addominali, e nient'altro. Caruso,Gigli,Pertile,Schipa,Ma­sini,Del Monaco,Filippeschi,Corelli,Ber­gonzi Tacker,Pavarotti, ecc cantavano tutti con questa tecnica, che poi è l'unica valida. I never got this tenor. i heard him most of this roles but not one to me was very good. It a weird technique, all that smiling and shoulder lifting. Listen to his Edgardo with Sills it just bloody awful. a master of style I don't think so
