  • What you said about believers who claim they "used to be atheists", like shockofgod, made a lot of sense. Gives me a bit to think about.

Though I still think this whole debate is so fucking ridiculous and useless. Why are we taking a "human" concept and relating it to rocks and giraffes?

  • @tattooskin72 Why are we taking a complex subject like "belief" and relating it to those things that are incapable of belief, ie giraffes, rocks, or, well, babies? That's the point.

  • I hear what you're saying, and these semantic arguments tend to get way too far up their own ass, but the fact of the matter of *actual use* of the word atheist is that it includes strong atheists, weak atheists, and whether or not they know it, occasionally people who label themselves as agnostics.

"Atheist" + more qualifiers is a better way to describe someone's state or degree of disbelief in gods.

Now, I could argue that "nonbeliever" could be even *more* prone to misunderstanding...

  • dictionary(.)com

atheist: a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings. (just like ever other reputable dictionary)

the etymology of atheist isn't a-theist(not a believer in god), its atheo-ist(godless belief)

  • What is that "god" you speak of? I heard there are couple thousand. How can one disbelieve in all of them given that one doesn't even have all of them at hand?

I lack believe in most of them, no cognitive engagement about them, but I don't believe in any of them. The fact that I don't believe in any of them does NOT depend on theism. So while the word in its construction is reactive the stance is not. At least not for me.

Theists brand me atheist, but they don't describe my stance correctly.

  • @tattooskin72 We relate this concept to rocks and giraffes as a response to people who admit that babies have no more ability to believe than a rock or a giraffe, yet still feel the need to use belief terminology for the former, but not the latter.
