Based on eyewitness written accounts. In the 17th century, a Bulgarian Christian region is selected by the Ottoman rulers to serve as an example of conversion to Islam. A Janissary who was kidnapped from the village as a boy now serving the Ottoman sultan is sent to force the reluctant inhabitants to convert. The Bulgarian christians have to chose between physical annihilation and losing their spiritual identity. Ultimately torture, violence, and rebellion break out. Based on real events and the novel "Time of Parting" (Vreme Razdelno) by Anton Donchev.

The novel is based on two individual eyewitness written accounts - by the priest Aligorko and the Venetian. The resulting text is a translation of the original French and Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic) texts. All names, characters and events appear in the original manuscripts.

  • Vreme in romanian means TIME . In romanian war is RAZBOI , it's a bit similar with bulgarian .

  • @IstorieAdevarataX

actually "razdelno" means "of parting". "razdyala" is parting. I like that version of the title better. I am not sure why they renamed it for the US market.

  • Anyway I shall give you 5 stars . Bravo ! What is this movie about anyway ?

  • @IstorieAdevarataX

Historically about forced conversion of Bulgarians by Ottoman Turks.

Philosophically about the meaning of spirituality and self identity.

  • @IstorieAdevarataX

Actually this movie is about what it takes to make one nation out of many.

Another point is that when faced with big force it would be wiser to bend otherwise you will break.

Another point is that the Bulgarians are a nation of slaves and traitors. And that there are no pure Bulgarians because everybody shagged them over the centuries.

Another point is that it is wiser to invest in knowledge and technology and less in religion.

    and many more.

  • @gespilk

Those are conclusions that only an ignoramous can make. Maybe if you want to lose your identity you would bend. That is your choice.

That is why Bulgaria retained it's identity we neither bent nor broke. Other nations got assimilated. Only nations with a strong culture and identity survive the test of time. Danubian Bulgaria was founded where it is in 681 coming from Great Bulgaria which was founded many centuries earlier. That is why it's the oldest country in Europe.
