"The Story of Hannukah"

Long ago in the land of Israel, a great nation of Jewish people lived in peace. There also lived a very wicked man named Antiochus, who was the king of neighboring Syria. The king invaded Israel, taking it over and decreeing that only his Greek gods could be worshiped, and that the Jews would have to give up their religion and customs. He ordered the Jewish temples to be converted or destroyed and those Jews who refused to worship their new gods were severely punished.

Some Jews obeyed Antiochus out of fear, but others were brave enough to refuse. Judah Maccabee was one such man. Judah and his brothers, all strong fighters, formed an army to fight King Antiochus and his men. The Maccabees fought the Syrian army until they won and triumphantly reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem.

They cleaned the temple, removing every sign and symbol of the religion that had been forced upon them by their invaders. Then they prepared to rededicate the temple to their God, but realized that they had only a tiny bit of oil to light the lamps.

They all knew the oil was just enough for one night, but then a miracle took place: instead of going out, the lamps just kept burning and burning. They burned for eight days and eight nights, and this way the Maccabees knew God was with them.
