The Lakers backed out of the Kevin Garnett deal because they did not want to give up Andrew Bynum.

KG being on the Lakers would be great but the Lakers wouldn't be contenders for long because he's getting older. Bynum is 21 and Odom is 29 so the Lakers will be contenders for at least the next 5 years. Even when Kobe retires the Lakers can get a free agent to take his place and they'll still be contenders.
