TenTec T1056 Direct conversion receiver kit (http://radio.tentec.com/kits/) built for the 160 meter amateur radio band (top band) shown receiving the ARRL CW (Morse) code bulletin sent at 18 WPM on 1.8175 MHz. (Note: in the meantime, W1AW QSY to 1.8025 MHz and that is where you will hear their current bulletins.) 73 de NG9D

  • This is neat, what is it though? is it HAM radio? Please inform me, I'd like to know.

  • @cliffcox66 @cliffcox66 Hi, and thanks for the question. Yes, it is Ham Radio (Amateur Radio). You can probably tell by these videos I really enjoy it as a hobby. If you would like more information, one place to start is web arrl.org/new-to-ham-radio

  • This might sound ignorant of me , but what is the direct conversion? Is the conversion kit used in conjunction with another kit? All I saw on the web site was a board for $32.

  • Localmode - Direct Conversion receiver feeds the signal from RF amp into mixer with signal from Local Oscillator. As LO is tuned near the received carrier freqency, mixer sends difference [LO-carrier] frequencies to AF amp. [LO-carrier] is what is heard in speaker. So, if the LO freq is 500 Hz below carrier freq you hear a 500 Hz tone. If LO is 500 Hz above carrier you also hear 500 Hz tone. For more info, see NG9D video: "Ten-Tec T1056 160m AM Mode Reception Demonstration" 73 de NG9D

  • Not much filtering eh?

Hi Dave. This kit has a simple bandpass using an LM358 op-amp. It is "direct conversion" (antenna RF is mixed directly with the L.O. frequency) so you also hear both upper and lower sidebands. The radio is useful to me for monitoring 160m plus it was fun to build. It is based on the Signetics NE612AN (~NE602) and the kit contains parts for all nine ham bands, 160-10m the builder chooses the band. Dave, thanks for your comment and 73 - KC9MAV DE NG9D

  • I've built almost all the bands and had much fun with mounting them in different cases. I give Ten Tec an A+ for selling these kits. I recomend building them.
