I am in awe of Van Dyke Parks and his ability to bring fresh and exciting and trend-vexing sounds into the commercial music business. Artistry like his gave me a lot of courage in the pre-Reagan era to try to find my way to a living, writing and arranging music. My list of music business heroes is not long, but VDP towers over the handful of names there.
