Construct a true flue pipe (organ pipe) using common materials. Parts 2, 3, and 4 describe the construction used in my Christmas organ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy5Fq7Knc6g). Website and further instructions at http://ssngai.byethost14.com/organ/organ.htm

This video was recorded using YouTube's direct webcam feature, which seems to truncate the video if the recording internet connection is too slow to send all the video frames.

  • And this is why organ pipes aren't made out of pvc. Too much work and the scales are all wrong.

  • @praestant8 Once I figured out a design, it wasn't much work at all. Each round PVC pipe takes 30 minutes to cut and assemble. Each square paper pipe (see other tutorial) takes 15 minutes. My pipes certainly aren't on par with metal pipes from a professional workshop, but for a few bucks and a few minutes the result isn't too shabby.

  • @ssngai perhaps not for a hobbyist who has no intentions with any of it other than for personal amusement. As one who works in organ building professionally the notion that one can go to their home depot and with a little personal cleverness and time can come up with something worthy of being called an instrument or even a piece of art cheapens a centuries old craft. Its why the organ is dying in American culture.

  • @praestant8 [1] You have entirely misunderstood the purpose of these videos. Have you considered that they help people learn about the physics of pipe organs? Have you considered that these videos might actually get people interested in serious organbuilding -- say, people like Ralph Giangiulio, who was so entranced after building his home organ that he left his engineering job to work in organbuilding? Every week I hear from people who want to learn more about the topic.

  • @praestant8 [2] You have a terribly pessimistic view of your own field. The organ and the works of JS Bach and others are timeless and majestic; they will never fade away. But do you know what stands in their way? Snobbery.

I hope that not all professional organ builders think the way you do. And I hope that one day you will regard organ hobbyists not as inferiors and enemies but as friends and allies.

  • What materials you used? I speak english bad, so i asking you? I made my pipes from lead.

  • @Furczyslaw 1) Cardboard 2) PVC Plastic. Thanks for watching!

  • Most of Bach is timeless, some of it over played. If I didn't have hobbyists demanding we give them quality sets of pipes for free, or give them consoles and other components for almost nothing so they can "build" an organ for their "poor" church perhaps I could agree with your sentiment. Sadly in these parts it is often the hobbyists and those that have started "foundations" to "promote the organ" with frankly inferior hobbyist quality mindset doing greater damage then "snobbery."

  • @ssngai No I understand your point. The message from most youtubers is the same "you too can "make" your own "pipe organ"with very little money and a little know how. Such thoughts are music to churches ears and its killing the business. What I would hope would make people more interested in the craft is how much labor and artistry goes in to a fine instrument, and not how quick and cheap one can be with house hold materials. So why not steer people to their local organ builder?
