Tractors dating from the 1930's and earlier filmed at the Threshermen's 2007 Annual Show in Federalsburg, Maryland, USA. They follow the classic dictum: "form follows function". Tractors found their characteristic layout about one hundred years ago. It is easy to see why they rapidly displaced the steam traction engine and for that matter the horse: simple, easy to start, and economical. A small farmer could hope to own one but could only rent the traction engine by the day for specific tasks.
They are much used in poorer countries in road construction as well as agriculture (see www.ruralroads.org.)
