@crippmeister I think it is supposed to be their formal military dress. At least, that is the intention of the costume designer, no doubt.

That one scene shows in a minute why Franz Josef and the Habsburgs were so loved by their subjects. Most dignified and just dynasty to rule anywhere. Hoch Habsburg!

The presidents and prime ministers of today are simply no match for the monarchs of old. If a lady would drop her pearls in front of some of our modern politicians, I doubt giving them back to her would be the first thing on their mind. I will leave it to the imagination of the reader to imagine what would happen in such a scenario.
